Essay 3
Do AI translation tools help or hinder language acquisition?

Does using AI translation tools instantly lead to fluent language levels, or does it make learning a language harder in the long run? Technology has changed many aspects of our lives, language learning is certainly one of them. While AI translation tools carry the risk of over reliance, their key benefits about giving instant information and offering personalized help make them valuable resources for language acquisition when used wisely.
First of all, the most immediate advantage of AI tools is the ability to deliver real-time contextual information. This feature helps learners quickly accelerate the learning process. Learners who encounter new words or phrases can instantly find the definitions and examples of how to use these words correctly. This is better than a hard-copy dictionary which is often too slow to provide the information. These instant responses will enable learners to maintain the learning process without constantly stopping all the time to look up those words they aren’t familiar with. Moreover, some research shows that AI tools such as DeepL and Google Translation contribute to improving students’ translation accuracy at the lexical, syntactic, and semantic levels, while also encouraging learners to engage in reflective revision of their output (Nguyen et al., 2025).
Beyond simple translation, AI tools do more than just give information; they offer personalized instruction and advice that transforms learning into active practice. Learners can use AI tools to build their language learning resources. For example, they can give the AI a prompt to generate a role-playing conversation based on a specific setting. The context might be a scenario about placing an order in a local restaurant. The AI will be a language partner and will help correct the mistakes as well as provide suggestions. This personalized feedback helps learners improve their skills and target their specific weaknesses where they need more work, turning passive study into hands-on experience.
However, critics point out that learners have access to artificial intelligence tools, and this access may make them dependent on the AI tools and skip the necessary thinking and hard work required for real learning. Research indicates that when learners become excessively reliant on AI tools, their practice in active skills such as writing and speaking subsequently decreases, which hinders the development of a deeper language proficiency (Rapa et al., 2024). It is true that a student might be tempted to simply copy and paste an entire work instead of forming the ideas by themselves. But this issue can be solved by being mindful. Artificial intelligence should be used by students to verify their work as an intelligent editor rather than replace their learning process. Artificial intelligence has to be used in grammar-checking and in testing a self-generated sentence in order to enhance learning rather than discourage it.
Overall, despite the fact AI tools may lead learners to skip the necessary steps, these tools provide instant information and customized learning practice means that such tools are good, provided they are used properly. We also have valuable resources as a result of modern technology. Learners can learn to speak more creatively by thinking at full capacity to improve their work, and AI can help them test their work through self-reflection and revision.
